A community for people interested in applied mathematics. We meet up to explore interesting concepts across optimisation, machine learning, graph theory and beyond. For our first meetup, we’ll take a look at polygon nesting: how can we efficiently arrange irregular shapes inside a limited space? The topic came from a very practical problem, placing solar panels on a roof, but quickly leads into computational geometry and some surprisingly tricky optimisation problems. We’ll give a short introduction to the problem, look at a few different approaches, discuss ideas together, and then just socialise and get to know each other. Any background is welcome :)
